PART III
DAY 5
Aaronâs life split in two the moment he first saw the creature, when it rattled his body and left him grasping for breath and for sanity on the floor of his own living room.
Ellenâs moment of painful clarity came as she sat on the living room floor, the life sucked out of her, her mind taken over by an invisible conqueror. The mechanics of that moment were not unlike those of her husband, but the results couldnât have been more different.
Unlike Aaron, Ellen knew exactly what was happening while it was happening. She got a taste of the creatureâs power. She understood what it was doing to her in a way that Aaron did not.
No longer would she be duped into a false sense of security just because the creature was hundreds of yards away from the house and could be trapped in place by light. No longer would she have to be persuaded that supernatural forces could hold quarter in the material world. The realist in her would not die, it would expand to include the new reality.
Because for those few minutes on the floor, it was in her brain. She was certain of it. She felt it moving around and sorting through her memories like files in a cabinet.
Only in hindsight, as she sped towards the Bensalem Sheriffâs Department with all ten of her fingernails dug into the vinyl steering wheel cover, did she view it as a missed opportunity. Ellen raged. Not at the monster, but at herself. That moment of contact, disorienting as it may have been, could have been her chance to find her son. If the creature could get into her thoughts, maybe there was a way she could get into the creatureâs. Was the answer hidden somewhere in the chaos of those moments?
She couldnât keep her thoughts together as she sped down State Road 639 with a fragment of sunrise behind her. They crashed and cascaded over each other; salmon swimming upstream.
She recalled families of decades-long missing children sheâd seen on the news, whoâd kept the faith that their children were still alive, still out there, just waiting for the right moment to simply knock on the door and ask what was for dinner. What a sick joke of an existence. What a cosmic con-job. Thinking about how pitiful those people sounded made her skin crawl.
Ellen knew she wouldnât be like them. She was never a woman of faith; she was a woman of science, and women of science do not hide from the truth. At some point, sheâd stop thinking about other lame duck parents and start thinking about the thing that would haunt her for the rest of her time on this earth: she was a bad mother. No, she wouldnât just be a bad mother, she would be the worst mother. Ellen Dreyer would be the woman whose perfectly happy and healthy kid simply vanished from right under her nose for no good reason.
All it took was a
